Garbage: Absolute Garbage

Garbage: Absolute Garbage

Amazon.com

Released in conjunction with a CD of the same name, Absolute Garbage is a collection of 15 music videos from the rock band Garbage. Fronted by Shirley Manson, whose smooth and distinctive voice is equally adept at purring as it is growling, the group also includes drummer Butch Vig, guitarist Steve Marker, and bassist Duke Erikson. But make no mistake about it: The visuals are all about the photogenic Manson. It was their breakthrough single "Only Happy When It Rains" that made an impact on both radio and MTV in 1995. Manson, who at the time resembled a fierce, red-headed version of supermodel Kate Moss, appears on screen in a blue minidress that matches her eye shadow and nail polish, and knee-length Doc Martens. Interspersed between random shots of extras dressed like Teletubbies, deconstructed bathrooms, and her bandmates (who are musically gifted but not particularly video friendly), Manson pleads her case for being happy when things "are complicated." That her dress changes in color to pink is almost incidental in the vignette, and "Only Happy When It Rains" manages to marry both arty intentions with a rock n roll cool vibe that doesnt come across as either clichd or lofty. Between 1995 and 2007, when Absolute Garbage was released, the band broke up and got back together a handful of times. But there is a cohesiveness to their look and sound, even as it evolves, that makes them distinctively Garbage. They worked with some of the eras most popular video directors. Fashion photographer Matthew Rolston succinctly captures the mood of "I Think Im Paranoid," while Samuel Bayer (best known for his work with Nirvana) helmed "Vow," a simple performance piece that captures the bands raw energy. Actually, its the concert style videos ("When I Grow Up") where the band seems most at home--commanding a stage. While some of the videos are widescreen, the majority are full screen, But all of them pop on the TV screen with their vivid imagery and vibrant colors. The DVD also includes a documentary called "Thanks for Your Uhhh, Support," that weaves in home videos, news clips, and concert footage. While the bands music indicates that Garbage formed organically, it wasnt quite that simple. The three men--all music producers living in Wisconsin at the time--saw a video of Manson performing in a different band and sought out the Scottish singer to front their group. They were smart enough to know that no matter how talented they were, they needed a voice--and face--to define them. --Jae-Ha Kim

This DVD is oneof my favorite items that I own from Garbage. My first favorite is the beautifulgarbage album.
Anybody who loves Garbage will love this, it is goo dmusic, creative videos, and a very mindblowing documentary that keeps you asking for more. I know myself, I bought this retail, and the actual album online. Both are great, great to hear updated versions of such great songs from Garbage. Even if you only know a couple songs from Garbage, by getting this will introduce you to the great world of Garbage that I know and love. Garbage just makes good music, and their videos are so creative. Great collection. I wish it had the video to Androgyny though.

Great Collection of Music Videos

As a new Garbage fan, I have found this DVD fun and learned a lot about the Bands beginnings in 1995 to 2005 through the added documentary after the videos. Ive already watched the DVD three times since I got it four days ago! Plus with the added double disk set of the CD Absolute Garbage, I have truly become a devoted fan. It is definitely worth the money, particularly for those who want to watch one or more of their videos and know you cant wait for MTV or other music channels (not on On Demand here :( - sad) to show one. Plus this would be great for dance parties...hmmm better plan one soon!

This set needs another warning label...

It has a parental advisory...now we need to be told that (as has been pointed out) not every video the band has done was included...theres also an animated version of "Shut Your Mouth" that isnt here...

But we should have been warned that one - "Queer" - has been altered! Whats with the picture suddenly going out of focus several times during the bridge of the song? And the audio has been changed...you dont notice until the end. Theres also something about "Push It" that doesnt seem right...cant put my finger on it yet.

Bought this thinking I could finally do away with my VHS and the video clips Ive collected over time...no such luck. Really disappointed in that.
Absolute Garbage...absolute delight

The first time I heard Garbage, I was in a friends car. He had a tape of the debut album. The song playing was "Supervixen". I remember I had to ask him what was wrong with the tape because the guitar kept stopping. When he said that was how the song went, I became intrigued and bought the album. Thus began my journey to becoming a fan of this most remarkable group. Now, watching this DVD it is as though I have rediscovered what drew me to this group. When you hear Garbage, it strikes your sense of hearing in a good way by the powerful and beautiful voice of Shirley Manson. In a great compliment to such a melodic voice come the musical talents of Duke Erikson, Steve Marker and Butch Vig. What emerges is not only a great sound, but also a unique one. This DVD succeeds in capturing the band in a similar fashion. Watch the videos in a play all fashion you can observe how the band evolved both in appearance as well as musically. Each video is creative and unique just like the band. It is, however, not over there. Proceeding after the videos is an insightful, humorous and profound documentary that shows the band behind the scenes. In the years 1995-2005, you can see firsthand the camaraderie while simply hanging out and that same camaraderie that followed while they performed on stage. The footage of concerts made me feel both happy and sad. I was happy that that after ten years they were still together after having been through their own "emotional landslide" and sad that only once have I seen a Garbage show live (Okay, not entirely sad as it was indeed a wonderful time in my life.) In my opinion, any fan of Garbage should not be without this DVD and for those just discovering Garbage will receive a rare treat such that new fans may be born. This will be one DVD I will continue to watch with much fondness in the years to come.
